What a standard portable toilet is
A standard portable toilet is the unit everyone pictures: a moulded cabin about four feet square and seven and a half tall, with a holding tank under the seat, a urinal, a paper holder and a vent stack running up one corner. There is no running water. Sanitiser is a dispenser by the door, and the tank is emptied on a service visit rather than plumbed to anything.
Who rents standard units
Job sites and general event use. On a construction site it is the unit OSHA counts, and for most events it is what the bulk of the order is made of, with a couple of ADA units and a hand-wash station alongside.
What standard portable toilet rental costs
Measured rates for standard units run $185 to $199 for a weekend (7 companies), and $110 to $170 a month (17 companies), before delivery. Delivery is usually $50 to $150 on top and is priced off the distance from the yard to your site, rather than from you to them. Those counts are companies, not quotes, and they are small on purpose: they are every operator we found publishing a rate at all, which is the point made on the methodology page. Two calls will still beat any national figure. Every unit type priced side by side.
What to ask before you book standard units
- How often is it serviced, and is the first service included in the quote?
- Is delivery and collection in the price, or added?
- How far is your yard from my site? Distance is usually priced in even when it is not itemized.
- What happens if it is blocked in on collection day?
Worth settling before you book. Servicing catches people out far more often than the price does. A unit on a month-long job needs pumping weekly, and a quote that looks cheap can be quoting a bare rental with each visit billed on top.
Where standard units are easy to find, and where they are not
Coverage is not even. In Maryland, 100% of the independent companies we checked name standard units on their own website. In Idaho it is 88%. In a thin market that is one or two yards inside driving distance, and on a summer weekend they are committed early. See coverage across every state.
How many standard units do you need?
For an event the starting point is one unit per 50 guests over four hours, from the ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 guidance, with more added for longer days and where alcohol is served. On a job site it is law rather than guidance: 29 CFR 1926.51(c) sets one toilet for up to 20 workers. Work it out for your headcount.

Questions about standard units
- How much does standard rental cost?
- $185 to $199 for a weekend (7 companies), and $110 to $170 a month (17 companies), plus $50 to $150 delivery. Those are measured from the operators who publish a rate, which is a small minority of the trade, so call two yards and compare what each includes.
