What a hand-wash station is

A hand-wash station is a freestanding sink unit ordered alongside the toilets rather than built into them: a basin or two, a foot pump, a freshwater tank and a gray water tank, soap and towels. It needs no plumbing and no power.

Who rents hand-wash stations

Anywhere food is served, and increasingly the default on any public event. Caterers, food trucks and market organizers usually require them, and on many job sites they are the practical answer to washing before eating.

What hand-wash station rental costs

Measured rates for hand-wash stations run $92 to $199 a week (8 companies), and $146 to $218 a month (6 companies), before delivery. Delivery is usually $50 to $150 on top and is priced off the distance from the yard to your site, rather than from you to them. Those counts are companies, not quotes, and they are small on purpose: they are every operator we found publishing a rate at all, which is the point made on the methodology page. Two calls will still beat any national figure. Every unit type priced side by side.

What to ask before you book hand-wash stations

  1. How many uses does the freshwater tank cover?
  2. Is soap and paper stocked and restocked, or supplied once?
  3. Is gray water collected on the service visit?
  4. How many stations for my headcount, and where should they sit relative to the food?

Worth settling before you book. They are ordered late and run out first, because the toilets get booked and the sinks get remembered afterwards. If food is being served, put them on the same order as the units rather than as an afterthought.

Where hand-wash stations are easy to find, and where they are not

Coverage is not even. In Wisconsin, 81% of the independent companies we checked name hand-wash stations on their own website. In Connecticut it is 43%. In a thin market that is one or two yards inside driving distance, and on a summer weekend they are committed early. See coverage across every state.

How many hand-wash stations do you need?

For an event the starting point is one unit per 50 guests over four hours, from the ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 guidance, with more added for longer days and where alcohol is served. On a job site it is law rather than guidance: 29 CFR 1926.51(c) sets one toilet for up to 20 workers. Hand-wash stations are counted against the same headcount, and wherever food is served they are effectively required rather than optional. Work it out for your headcount.
