What Happens to a Porta Potty in Freezing Weather
Northern markets price winter differently for a reason. Antifreeze, access, and the servicing problems that only appear below freezing.
Winterizing is a real process
Antifreeze goes into the holding tank, and many operators switch to a non-water deodorizer for the season. It is not optional in a cold market — a frozen tank cannot be pumped, and a unit that cannot be pumped is out of service until it thaws.
Access is the bigger problem
The truck still has to reach the unit every week. Snow, ice and plough banks close routes that were fine in October, and a dry run in January costs the same as any other dry run. Keeping the approach clear is the customer's job and it is worth saying out loud when the schedule is set.
Placement changes
Somewhere ploughs will not bury it, somewhere that is not the low point where meltwater collects, and on ground that will still be firm after a freeze-thaw cycle. The summer spot is often the wrong winter spot.
Ask what winter costs before winter
Some operators price winter service higher, some do not, and almost none of them publish it. It is a fair question to ask in October rather than discover in December.
